I recently purchased a 1970 4/4 from the original owner. He gave me the chassis number which is on the title also. I wanted to find it on the car and was told it was stamped on the front crossmember on the passenger side. I took a look and couldn't find it there or on the member under the seat. What am I missing. There is no rust on the car and it is the original frame so where else should I look? Thanks in advance. Marcus

You need to slide the seat right forward (and if the seats allow fold them forward too). It's the rail to the rear of the seat not the one in front of them.

The number stamped (more often than not) on the bonnet flange should be the last four digits of the engine number.

At some stage Morgan changed where they stamp the chassis or VIN number and on the current cars it is stamped on the passenger side front crossmember where it is meant to be seen by peering through the screen!

I'm new to Morgans and am sort of perplexed. My car does not have sliding seats. It has wooden platforms that sit between the steel members with a bladder on the top of the wood for a cushion. Seems rather crude but effective although there is no way to adjust the seat position. I've looked at both steel members and have found no numbers. We are talking the passenger side aren't we?

Take the easy way out. Get yourself a set of stamps and stamp the frame number you've been given onto the cross member somewhere where it's easy to get at. End of problem.

Mine's on the driver's (right looking from the rear of the car) side on the cross-member behind the seat.

I've got a left hand drive car. Does that mean that it is on the right side of your car which would be on the driver's side of your car? I've looked there already. Marcus

At that time the stamping of numbers was not very deep into the metal of the chassis, so even if it has not rusted, a few coats of paints will cover the shallow marks very easily indeed.

On my two of my +4s the number was stamped on the top of the crossmember on the driver's side (on a RHD UK car) but both were very faint and I had to search a long time to find them. On the other one it had been re-chassied so many times that the original number had long been lost, and like Tim suggests, I bought some stamps and did my own. If after searching really diligently for a long time , you really don't find it, then follow Tim's advice and do it yourself.

Marcus, I have a 1969 4/4 and I've never been able to find mine either!
Must have another look sometime. My seats were replaced with 1970 plus 8 buckets so they slide. You have the original bolster with blow up cushions, now quite rare I think but the cushions and wooden bases should be easily removable. Let us know where the chassis no. was when you find it!
