Hello,
just a quick question because I am not sure what the root course is.
plus 4 GDI MJ 2014 4500 km, I have a loud noise since yesterday only when the engine is hot. The noise is independant from the engine revolution.
I did last weekend my regular maintenance and filled some coolant in the system to the correct level. Is it possible that there is to much water in the system and is now blowing through a valve? Could that make such a loud noise?
No leakage at all and everything looked fine.
Some ideas or advice appreciated. (I know I can go to the dealer under warranty but would avoid if it's only a minor.)
Thanks
Torsten

Hi Torsten - I have GDI also (late 2014 build) but have not had to add any coolant at all (and would not expect to) although I have done less km than you, at about 2,000km. How much coolant did you have to add?

Hi Richard,
it was not more than 0,1-0,2 Liter. I filled it only up to the correct level. The idea behind was to have it under better control when it is filled up to the correct level and not something between.
I don't think there was/is a leakage.

It sounds like a howl from a bearing in high frequency. But I totaly exclude a bearing or belt problem because it is totaly independent from the engine speed.
Never heard something like that.

Not anything to do with the fan coming on? Mine comes on at about 100oC - not particularly noisy though, but if some dirt has got into it I guess it may give that type of noise and would not vary with engine revs. But it would stop when the fan stops.

There tends to be a few cables and such near the fan. It could well be that something is rubbing on the rotating hub of the fan. Obviously it is not touching a blade or there would be a high frequency clicking. Could be a bearing inside the fan too.
Should be fixed under warranty whatever it is.

Fan or even cam belt squeal? Belts will howl if the pulleys get out of alignment.

Do you need to disconnect the fan? There is a risk of overheating - can you see if the noise is present when the fan is not working?
In the above I assume the noise is presentt when the engine is hot and the car stationary - if the noise is only when moving then transmission issues would also need to be included.
