Is taking the optimistic decision that if you don't do more than about 1500 miles a year (between oil changes) then you don't need to look in the tank between services a safer strategy than I had thought?
No... its all my fault for over tightening. hopefully it will be ok with an oil and filter change. I think I got 99.9% of it. My new bicycle tyre gasket is better becuase it produces less of a pinch.
Charles, the oil tank cap is 'Malvern' quality, had the same issue... ...Easyest fix: go to a rubber shop and ask for oil resistend rubber (which the Malverns obviously wasn't) in 3mm thikness and let them stamp out a disk with 5 cm diameter(+2 on reserve). cost about 3 €

Mine went the same way but I found it before it broke up. I made a temporary gasket out of 2 layers of gasket paper till I got a replacement from Morgan.
