Laurie,

I hope they know what they are doing...

Take a look:

Upper pad is the old one, carefully lined up woth the new pad beow, face to face.
The new pads were ordered from the factory via Williams, as you know. So they must be correct?

The new pads hace a slightly lower inner profile, meaning they rub an area of the disk not previously touched by a pad. That means new pad gripping on rust at the lower edge.

We will see what happens on the road!

Peter if the new pads are going to rub on the lower edge where rust is then I would take some wet and dry paper to them to clean the area up using even pressure whilst spinning the disks. I would start with 800 grade and see how they come up. You don't need them polished as the pads will do the final job, just remove the loose rust. I would do this to ensure the pads don't initially grab on the rust, when you first use them. cheers

You should never fit new pads to uneven areas of wear without first getting them skimmed professionally (if disc thickness allows) as it'll unevenly wear the pads and at first you can even have limited brake force.

That's what I've always been told.

Same thing on later Trad cars with the Caparo calipers but this time there is an 'overhang' of pad material at the outer edge, this can give a false impression of the amount of pad material left on the brake pad if you have a cursory glance from the fixing end, for a true wear assessment you have to look at the top or bottom of the caliper, changed a pair a few weeks ago that had about 2mm of lip that had never been in contact with a brake disc. It requires a very small amendment to the carrier bracket mounting hole position in production to rectify this so expect it to be solved in about 50 years or so I guess ;-). Easy enough to remove the excess lip if you pop the pads out at major service and face them on a surface plate (or a sheet of plate glass etc) and some course emery paper.

It gets worse...

The nearside wheel has the correct pads.
No problems.

The Offside had "incorrect" pads fitted.

So I'll get the disk skimmed.
But I'm not going to be paying for it.... swear

How can MMC let a car out from the factory with different pads, left and right front wheels? It probably isn't unsafe, given the car has ABS, but it isn't good enough! scared

Erm now if someone says "they all do that sir!" they need stringing up!

That is truly sloppy!

That is very odd, you should always replace pads in pairs to both brakes at the same time. crazy2 Could it possibly be that they are different right and left of each disk and someone has put two rights on one side and two lefts on the other if you see what I mean?

It's a warranty claim in my opinion?
