My Duratec engined +4 just failed its MOT on missions. It had a HC level of 279 at fast idle (limit 200) and a CO of 3.85 (limit 0.3) and at idle a CO of 8.16 (limit 0.5).
Apart from losing some crispness to the exhaust note through being too rich, there is no notable change in running or performance.
The OBD put a question over the lambda before the CAT, but changing that didn't make any difference. The CAT look OK?
Anyone got any ideas?

Something very wrong...

My old 1991 Mercedes 190 2.6 with NO cat didn't produce pollution like that, especially the CO.

No sensible suggestions other than take it to a Ford engine specialist....

I trust they had it super hot? That helps but probably won't be enough, to be honest those figures point to a Lambda probe failure. The other thing that might be worth considering is the fuel pressure regulator, not sure if you know but the amount of fuel injected is a combination of the injector pulse duration and fuel pressure in the rail, one overlooked area is a faulty pressure regulator. There is a schrader valve for checking the line pressure and any decent garage should be able to check for you, sorry but don't know the Ford figure but reference to one of their dealers should be able to quote the figure. The adaptive shift will try and adjust the pulse width of the injectors until it reaches its pre set limit then it will pop a MIL light on and store a code.

What exhaust system do you have fitted?

By the way this should be in the Maintenance & Servicing forum.

Thanks Colin, They did get it hot and I have changed the lambda, but no improvement, I'll look at the fuel pressure, thanks for the suggestion.

Just to close this out, my car is fixed and flew through the retest with a CO of 0.004 at idle.
The culprit was the EVAP valve that recycles the fuel tank vapour into the combustion line. It was struck open and causing both the emissions and the rough idle.
Thanks to those who offered constructive help.
Rgds
Mike

That is great news and a really low reading with the fix.

+1. Following on from your MOG Talk post have you tried Burton Power for the replacement part?

An issue easily avoided by fitting throttle bodies wink

The EVAP valve is removed and the tube blocked off (don't tell anyone though)
