A seemingly simple question....what powers the power steering pump on a 2014 Plus 8, is it a belt drive or an electric pump?
If it is a belt drive is there an electronic clutch, so the pump only turns when needed, or is it on all the time?
And why does it need an oil cooler for the power steering fluid?

No idea about the first one, suspect it's electric but not sure? The belt driven ones are normally running all the time and there is a pressure relief valve that allows fluid to 'cycle' back to the reservoir......however, that's on systems I have worked on and 5 years after retiring is a long time in development. Driving anything takes HP and HP doesn't grow on trees so in the search for every MPG (hence electric PAS) so would not be surprised if they had an isolator clutch but for safety it would need to be bloody bullet proof so my money is on it being electric and all belt systems being clutch less....happy to be proved wrong, happy to learn
As to a cooler, if you pump hydraulics no matter what method you use for pumping you will create heat, heat affects viscosity and that will affect the feel and efficiency of the PAS so simple to fix a cooler inline, it's been the case for many, many years on larger cars.

The Plus 8 has a hydraulic system.
If it were electric and groaned that much, something would be seriously wrong!

M The question was about how the power steering pump is driven, belt driven or electric driven hydraulic pump?

M You have never hear an electric pump system on a Ford then.....;-)

I think he meant if we're electric PAS not electric pump.

Sorry, it's belt driven.
I don't think that there are any electronics involved as it's the smaller non-active pump.

M That is what I thought... BUT a fellow member of LogMog with a very early Aero Plus 8 has a power steering problem and has been told by a dealer that the pump is electric and will have to be replaced: needless to say it is "wing off". I thought this odd and wanted to get a second opinion....

The early Aero 8's used the BMW Mini Hydraulic electric system. This means that the racke etc is conventionally hydraulic, however the system is pressurised by an electric pup thus having no parasitic loss from the engine. I suspect it is the same on the newer cars as there are no current BMW's with engine driven hydraulic steering.
