Great day today. Set off early this morning in drizzle ( no hood of course) & stopped by to pick up friends in their MX5 (roof down) & headed for the classic car breakfast meet up at Dearnford Lake, Witchurch organised by the Triumph TR Register. Met Kevin Vernon there who was on a test run in a 1957 Plus 4 he has been restoring for a customer over the last 18 months that looked fabulous. Then a lovely run down through Wem to Attingham Hall near Shrewsbury to make use of our recently joined National Trust subscription. Afternoon in the sun.
Ran down from the Hotel Metropole in Llandrindod Wells to the home of Welsh Malt Whisky.
The roads of Mid-Wales are an absolute delight, mostly well surfaced and smooth with, on a bank holiday, almost no traffic. One section of the A470 we drove for more than 10 minutes without seeing another car - and this was at 11am!
Welsh whisky may seem to be "wrong" but the product is far from wrong. Up to this year the mash was made for them by Brains Brewery and they distil it in a unique pair of stills that owe more to industrial/petrochemical distillation than classical pot stills, giving 92% ethanol and some very complex flavours. They then go the usual sherry/Madeira cask ageing before bottling. This year they installed their own brewery to produce their own mash. It will be interesting to see in 8 years what the resultant whiskey tastes like!
Up to Widecombe-in-the-Moor and the Old Inn for a Birthday lunch, en route the flowers and foals abounded. A great place to be this time of year. A pint of Jail ale topped it off nicely.
