Rover T16 +4 in '97.
Long or short door will depend upon when in '97. The long door arrived for MY '98, so Sept/Oct '97.
You will probably find the gearbox in the 4/4 to be much sweeter.
Drive both, see what suits you. Internal dimensions will be pretty much identical, unless one is a 4 seater...

Have been told that the above cars shares the same width and length in the "cockpit" ??

Assuming a similar price range I would not go for a car 9 years older than the other as it it means 18 year old versus a 9 year old one. I had both +4 and 4/4 on my radar and was originally tempted by the additional engine power but now happy with a handsome 4/4.

I agree. My engine just keeps getting better and better. Especially. since I started filling it with super unleaded. drive

1.8 Duratec compared to the T16? I'd be going for the 4/4 myself.

So would I. The 1.8 Duratec is a great engine. Fit a sports exhaust and a high flow air intake and you will find it performs very well.

If comfort is a concern the later car has adjustable reclining seats. Please correct me if I am wrong but the earlier one doesn't?

A good point Roger, and often overlooked. In 2008 I had no idea that some seats didn't recline so I was lucky. Of course you can never assume that the seats are original anyway, but for me the two key issues, both of which I missed back then was the long door vs short door and the (folding and) reclining seats.

When did the stainless steel bulkhead and galvanised chassis become standard?
That, avoiding the Rover engine and the arguments put forward already make the 2006 car the only viable option.

There's also the ease of getting stuff in and out behind the seats too. Those who don't have reclining seats often find it a faff to keep sliding the seat back and forth (which isn't easy either!).
