Talk Morgan Forums Community The Malvern Arms Summer vacation in Ireland?

A question to the Irish out there:

we are just planning our summer vacation (family of four children are 15 and 17) and wish to go to Ireland during August.

The plan is to book some hotels in advance, and otherwise drive along the coast and find b&b or hotels for the evenings.

Is that a good idea or are there obstacles that we are not aware of, like "the island is crowded because the school holiday is in August, you won´t find a hotel" or "the place is full of mosquitoes"?

We took the high speed ferry from Holyhead to Dublin with the Coupe last year. The Ferry was excellent with no loading issues. A few nights in Dublin and then down to Cork and others. Had a great time. We used the main roads rather than the more scenic stuff I am afraid however I did a fair amount of business down there in a previous company and so did travel around.

Assume that as you go further south your average ground speed slows - up to 20%. From moderate speed in the Dublin area you end up following slower traffic in the south and Cork. Also the roads tend to be fine on the main routes but a lot slower off the main paths.

I usually allow for a 20% increase in journey time in the more distant areas. I imagine this may be slightly worse in holiday season.

Not sure if you are travelling to the North but it has plenty of great destinations. Our Morgan club based here head off on runs throughout the summer. Can't remember a traffic jam this century but you may get stuck behind a tractor if you are really unlucky.
Popular destinations for us are Fermanagh and the lakes, The north coast and Giants Causeway, The Glens of Antrim and coastal route, the Strangford peninsular and ferry from Portaferry, The mountains of Mourne and Newcastle county down. Belfast Titanic quarter. Mount Stewart (visited by Prince Charles last week}. Castle Ward {Game of Thrones setting}. I could go on but it is also very popular with golfers and Rory might cause a traffic jam or two at Royal County Down this week

Sounds like a good plan for an excellent holiday. In view of the number of you, I'm guessing it won't be in the Morgan ! You can always book places on the web once you're there as your movements become clear.
