The dealer says we need a new rear tire. Can't imagine why Any suggestions for what to get?

I have had the same problem, there must be some strange small animals in my garage to eat up the tire during my sleep

I just went through the tire selection business. I simply went on "Tire Rack", entered the size (175/65/15), looked at what they had and picked one based on price and performance. It is a KUMHO and is out in the garage along with a package of dyna beads awaiting my attention. I think most modern tires in our size for the rear will work fine. It is front tires you really want to be picky about as there is not a lot of grip up front.

Why not try a lower profile?

Just fitted a Yokohama A Drive to mine. Its a 175/55/15 and the M3W feels much more lively and you can generally drive in a higher gear than you might be used to. Ok, you lose around 5mph at the top end, but how often do you go there?

I fitted mine primarily for improved acceleration and drivability in the higher gears for hillclimbing and racing, but I'm leaving it on for road use also, through the summer at least. It drops the back end by around 20mm

I did consider a 50 profile, but found there was very limited tyre choice and I also felt the back of the car would drop to the point where it might be too low for general road use. If you have adjustable shocks, which I don't, you could jack it up I guess

I have just replaced the original Yokohama with a Kumho as well, a KH27 Ecowing. It was slightly cheaper than the Yoko, has a fairly symmetrical tread design, better wear and wet grip figures but most importantly, it was in stock on the shelf. The Yokohama lasted just over 6000 miles. The front Avons look to be lasting forever now that the steering geometry is sorted, hardly any wear since then.

So totally agree. The rear can be a hard rubber for longevity with an ability to scratch on command or a soft tire for grip and a short life.

Fronts, however, are absolutely where it's at! I added Blockleys and they are a vast improvement over the stock Avons but, seriously, if I wanted a race worthy M3W I'd rip off the front fenders and get different sized wheels and some serious motorcycle tires!

If you remove the mudguards and change the wheels to fit grippy motorbike race tyres you are in Racing class. Would have to spend a lot more money on the engine then to be competitive.

I run in Standard Class and nippymog is in Touring Modified due to his upgrades. You pays your money and takes your pick...but whatever class you're in, its fantastic fun doing competitive motorsport in the M3W (5 Speeder)

Its our race debut on Sunday at Cadwell Park...which looks daunting!!
