I have a wandering fuel gauge on my 8 - it moves around at will +/- around 10%. I filled up today (courtesy of the patented Nick flap technique) and it was moving between 85% full and 97% full. This was whilst driving gently on a level road. Is this likely to be a sender issue or a float issue? I guess I can live with it, it's roughly accurate.

if it is wandering + and - of the actual i would say it is the float/sender unit giving an incorrect voltage and thus level.
If it is dropping and then climbing back and then dropping from the actual level but never going above the actual level then i would be looking for a poor earth or connection. Either on the tank end or on the gauge end.

Thanks Mark. It is wandering + or - of the actual. New sender maybe.... In the SS it shifts by an increasingly large amount depending on how much fuel is in the tank - one minute you can have 5% - next minute 35%. I suspect this is due to the tank design (tall and thing) and the sender location

Mine is all over the place too - way more than 10% at times.
I'm not sure that it's a 'fault' and I just take a moving average as I go along.
We've all just become accustomed to deadly accuracy from Porsche and BMW

I just set my trip meter to 0 when I fill up - then I know that after another 400 miles or so it is time to fill up again - then I never get below having a couple of gallons or so in the tank.
I just use the fuel gauge as a rough indicator.
It is - after all - a Morgan!

OK - that's good to know.... I shall leave as is then. I'm used to a rock solid needle, not one that look drunk.

It's part of the charm of Aero ownership - the fuel gauge is more of adore global item than something to be relied on. My strategy was to always fill up at the point that it was 25% left. Always worry about detritus in the bottom of the tank if it gets too low...

the gauge needle is rock solid and looking at the % display it changes by no more than 2 or 3% during normal driving. Steep slopes make a more significant difference, more as you describe.
But given my car spend its first year at the factory I'm not sure quite how standard it all is...

I would take it back and get them to replace it with the standard wandering gauge. It's part of the fun not knowing whether or not you will make the next petrol station.
