I have a newish 4/4 and am I'm contemplating buying an MGA as I can't fit in a classic plus 8, which is what I would really like. I'm 6'6".

Have seen a really great restored MGA MkII: top dollar, but it seems bona fide.

Can I be dissuaded? What should I look for?

Advice please? Now be nice please!

Nowt wrong with an MGA. Had one once, watch for all the usual places for rot plus gearbox synchros are weak, they can jump out of gear on overrun. Wires desirable.

don't be scared! they are good cars and pretty too in my opinion..

Have you tried a Moss Box +8? Much more legroom than the later ones especially with a small amount of modification to the heel board/seat. 3500cc sounds good to me but maybe there are not that many in Aus to try. Go on, you know it makes sense!

I had a 1955 MGA and yes it is a very pretty car. The cross ply tyres made the ride a little vague but by far the worst thing was the terrible brakes. Alright in their day when no one else had ABS but terrifying now in heavy UK traffic. Stay out of Sydney and you should be OK.

I took my MGA to Spain for a couple of years and the engine overheated in summer. I fitted an electric fan but it didn't help much!

A beautifully restored MGA was one of the best riding MG's I've ever been in. It was lovely, just vintage enough to be a better experience than an MGB. Note - no scuttle shake!

But plenty of shed MGA's out there.

A V8 Roadster is a different thing completely, and good in different ways.

But I've overdosed on MG and will stay with Morgan.

What do you think of the RV8s?

Condor this might be worth some consideration, there have been two of these special + 8's on the market this last year ( Uncle Melvyn and Allon Whites had one also ) and I'm sure this could be readily adaptable for legroom and of course they come with the taller screen as well.

Good luck with whatever you chose, the MGA is a fine looking car and far more unique than the B's.

Just don't go leaving TM...

RV8's are odd Bud. I've really tried to like RV8's. When they were announced, we had a presentation by Rover at Leeds (or Wakefield) technical college with one of the prototypes.
All the wealthy MG blokes bought one. They were £25k and this was 1992, so a lot of money.

The trouble with them is that they rot, especially the screen surround. Some prices are sky high - headlamp cowls and rear lamps are two examples. Panel fit is poor - look at the bonnet/front panel & boot shuts. The seats are high so it feels like sitting on rather than in the car. They go well enough but steering is heavy unless power steering is fitted. All the interiors are the same creamy beige, which I don't like. I came to the conclusion that I'd be better off building my own, but I can't be arsed doing that again!

I nearly went to look at one two years ago, because they now are 'good value', but in the end didn't bother. The later the better - they had constant upgrades throughout production. R380 gearbox on the later ones.

It is either unique or it is not.
