Interestingly, we had some guests come for one of our cottages last Friday. There had been a bad accident enroute which gridlocked many of the roads and theiir 3 year oold 3 series BMW had a dickie fit in the traffic. It started off saying there was an automotatic transmission fault which then progressed to telling there was also a traction control problem followed by ABS malfunction and whole liteny of toher warnings and flasshing lights. They finally made it here and called out BMW breakdownn the next day who carried out some tests including downloading something that was sent off to BMW head office to analyse the fault. It came back there was a faulty tyre pressure sensor on one of the wheels although the tyre pressures were fine. Apparently, it triggered off a chain reaction of faults all of which were OK apart from this sensor! New sensor ordered.

I've always rather liked the style of the Tesla and an interesting car from a technical,point of view. I sat in one a few weeks ago and really disliked the large iPad like centre panel!

If you want to see a BMW christmas tree - you should see the dash when the x-Drive control unit fails!!!

Come to think of it they mentioned the X-Drive was showing a fault too (but not faulty) & that it was like Blackpool Illuminations!

Hi Peter. You do Jaguar a disservice with that statement. The XE has the new Jaguar developed "Ingenium" engine, not a Ford Ecoboost, and quite an engine it is to. So the engine is made in England along with the rest of the car.

Whilst the Ingenium Diesel is excellent the Jaguar dealer does not know when cars with the gasoline Ingenium motor will be available: JLR is not giving them even an estimated date.
For now they are selling gasoloine engine cars with the 2.0L Ecoboost motor or 3.0l 340 bhp V6 Supercharged.

Hmmm. I've just been having a shufti at the specs for the XE. The base model diesel puts out an incredibly low 99g/km - sounds wonderfully tax efficient; yet with lightweight aluminium body, 165 horses & broad spread of torque should still be a reasonable performer. I gather the 4x4 option will be coming out next year, so I'll wait and see what the figures look like for that model. Emissions will obviously be higher, but anything under 140g/km works for me under the French TVTS (company car) system.

Both car and bike magazines seem to have the same habit of praising most new cars to the sky, particularly british ones, only for you to read 12 months later that their new latest competitor is far better. Where do you go for dispassionate reviews?

Watching that was hard work! It was disappointing that the revue highlighted a poorer than sector interior - thats the one area where I would have hoped that Jaguar could better the pretty ordinary German efforts. And still on the negatives, the rear end looks like an almost straight BMW rip off. But the performance seemed to rate well .

The question in my mind would be the reliability. Quality wise Jaguar have claimed more resurrections than Lazarus, each time for it to be proved a bit over hyped. Buying with my own money, I would only consider a Jag if it offered something not available elsewhere as the F type does for example. The XE seems fairly similar to the 3 series so I would chose the German offering. If I still had a company car, it would be a different choice.
