What's wrong with a traditional cork gasket? When you get an engine whine do you say it's been corked?

PTFE tape worked well for me on the threads and I just didn't tighten it down tight. If you use a few turns of tape its tight enough anyway

geh in den heimwerker markt. in der sanitär abteilung findest du weisses gewinde-dichtungs band. und ja, es ist teflon. früher brauchte man rosshaar zum abdichten von gewinden, heute dieses band.

As Swiss Ghost said in German, PTFE/Teflon plumbing tape is used instead of horsehair and "bosswhite" sealant. It is to be found in any DIY store and the cost is trivial.

PTFE tape is not something I would use anywhere near an oil system. Great for water, but in oil you will run a risk of small bits of ptfe finding their way into the engine.
To seal the lid, you need something that is soft and will deform to the lip of the tank to prevent leaks, and will not degrade or break up under constant contact with hot oil.
Cork gasket meets both these criteria and has been used in such applications for over a century. Why try to reinvent a wheel?

no problem with that: it goes on the outside thread of the oil tank and not the filler cap! and its very thin this tape! no way to "cross" the border and go inside the tank.

Fair enough, each to his own - it's your engine, and your risk. I just don't see why using an unsuitable product is preferable to something has been proved for many years in many vehicles to work fine, is cheap and easily obtainable.

My seal is this shape: http://tinypic.com/r/95twkn/8I wonder whether this is deliberate to make it seal on the inside of the filler tube, or whether it has just swollen?. There seems to be no sign of imminent fragmentation.

I think you find its swollen and can very easily be split when the cap is screwed tight. Personally i would get that changed without delay to be safe
