Midwinter Flying in New Zealand

Stunning mid-winter's day here in NZ. Went for a fly from Auckland down to our Central North Island volcanic plateau and back

Wow - great pics. If fly in UK in the south east and generally have to fly around 2 to 3000 ft to keep clear of airspace restrictions. How high were you to get these fabulous pics? VIZ is amazing too.

It was a crystal-clear no-wind day. The pictures are just an iPhone6 through the screen. That mountain in the distance in picture 4 is 130km away. Close to cities we keep below 2500' but once clear you're free up to 6500' most areas. The sortee over the mountain was 10000' Minus 1 degree outside but thankfully we have a heater

Great photos Philip.

My daughter and her bf are currently working at a place called the Powder Horn at Ohakune which I think isn't too far from Mt Raupehu.

I've added an extra photo pandy. You can just make out the ski field. It's called Turoa. It is the ski field that the Powderhorn and town of Ohakune services. It faces the prevailing wind on the South West side of the mountain and is a little more advanced than the other ski fields that are on the more sheltered northern side that is centre of the bigger mountain in photo 2.
