Hi Guys,
I have recently completed a restoration of my 1956 4/4. The interior has had to be completely replaced including the prop shaft tunnel.
When driving I now sometimes have a grinding noise when the propshaft touches the tunnel if we hit a dip in the road.
I think either the tunnel is not tall enough or the leaf springs need to be replaced, My guess is that I have not made the tunnel tall enough - so can anyone give me measurements from the top of the propshaft to the top of the hole going through the wooden panel behind the seats (I think it might be called a heel board - I don't know why because its nearer my arse than my heels - but thats another question)

Can't help at all with the measurements, Bleasers (mine's a 4-seater so probably rather different geometry) but the 4-seater-ness of it does give a good clue to why it's called a heel board - thanks in large part to my smallest child's muddy heel marks thereupon

Bleasers - take it off and find the witness mark where it catches. You might get away with either a simple reshape (courtesy of Mr Hammer), or by spacing the tunnel either with washers or a ply 'gasket'.

I had the same problem on my '59 4/4 after a rebuild.
If you have changed the floorboards it is easy to get the tunnel out of line.
I had changed the gearbox, so it needed a new front cover, so the rear tunnel needed a bit of adjustment and packing.
As Dave says take it off and find out where it is touching probably around the universal joint coupling. Try realigning the tunnel if on the sides, packing up if on the top.
A Panhard rod would be cheaper and easier than new springs.

Thanks for the replies, it's all new and nothing existed to make a pattern. It's not catching left and right just up and down. I have only left 2.5" clearance I'm thinking it might need to 3.5"
What was your clearance?
