I have the same issue.

There is an alternative, not made by 3M film, that "self heals" using a warm hiar dryer.
Called X-Pel there is an interesting thread on Pistonheads.

I'm tempted to get the film removed from the running boards and try the x-Pel film.

No thats a warning off the lad who is spraying the mog at the moment if you buff it with a machine you take a surface off the paint you have to, to remove the scratch if it scratches again and you buff again then the paint layer is no doubt thinner from the first time . Hence you can not keep doing it.
