Nearside Rear Hub Oil Seal is leaking on my 2005 Roadster fitted with wire wheels(splined hubs)I am assuming it's a BTR axle.can anyone give me the socket size for the castellated nut? There seems to be very little clearance between the nut and the hub to take a socket. Also I am assuming a right hand thread.Any other tips on this job would be appreciated.

Not something I've had to do yet but measure the nut - preferably with a digital caliper - I imagine it's about an inch and a quarter or the metric equivalent. Look closely at the threads on the half shafts, because one may be left handed.
Oh and double check that the breather is clear!

Thanks Dave, the nut is so far down the splined hub that it's difficult to get a measurement.I've tried 32mm and 1 1/4 in.,no luck but I'm not sure even if I have got the correct size that the socket walls will be thin enough to fit between the nut and the hub.Good advice on the axle breather,I'm checking that next and hoping to find it's blocked!

You can get a hub nut box spanner off ebay etc. The walls are thinner than socket .

At last found time to continue with this job.The breather is clear.I guessed at 1 5/16 in.for the nut and got a box socket from Amazon.I had to grind the eternal corners of the socket as much as I dare as the clearance is really tight, but eventually it fitted and the nut came off easily. However I can't shift the hub.I'm using a very heavy duty commercial three leg puller and belting the centre bolt severely.I think the hub may have shifted a couple of mm but it's solid now.Any ideas? Also if I ever do succeed ,on refitting the hub how do I ensure it is properly seated when it is so tight?

Try a bit of heat on the hub.

I was just going to say that, but wasn't sure if it would be the right thing to do. Now I know 'cos Dave said it..

I had to take the half-shaft out on one side of mine and separate the hub on a hydraulic press. There's a thread on here somewhere.

Success at last, quite a lot of heat and brute force and the hub sprang off .So I can now sea the oil seal, how do I get it out? Do I need to remove the half shaft, which won't budge at the moment? is it advisable to replace the hub bearing even though I can't feel any free play at all(and the car has only done 13000 miles)If anyone has words of wisdom,I'd love to hear them
