The most enjoyable part of my time on Motor magazine, for which I worked from 1976 until 1983, was going on four-car group tests to Wales. There would be four of us, three writers and a photographer.
We always stayed somewhere near Dolgellau and our favourite resting place was the Bala Lake Hotel. I do not know what it is like now but in those days it was excellent - a good selection of beers in the bar, good food and wine, all reasonably priced (not that I was paying!).
I must have done at least half a dozen of these trips per year, so over 40 in total. One thing I remember clearly is that there was not a single group test to Wales without rain either on Day 1 or on Day 2.
