Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. That is a well known fact. One of the key problems: there are no cars on Venus.
My wife was driving cars since I knew her. She always had her own car available but with much lower milage than I do, her cars always seemed to age faster than mine. While I can not stand the slightest rattle somewhere under the dashboard she gets her car to service as soon as the car refuses to move at all any more. As I pay for the maintenance her "saving service cost philosophy" his hardly affordable to me. What's going wrong in a women's brain? My beloved one runs the house all time tidy, grew up 3 lovely children, handles the dog well but is unable to cope with the needs of a simple car! The old Landrover I use for everything, including dog transport, looks more tidy than her Passat. There are all those great technical gimmics and she is simply unwilling to even recognize them but would bitterly complain if she would get a "basic version" model. What's wrong with the people from Venus when it comes to cars??
Anyone got similar observations to report?

Absolutely nothing wrong with them.
My good lady was the one that suggested buying the Coupe. I would never have had the furry bits to consider using it as a daily car. But that's a different problem.
She bought a good part of the Series 2 as well and also suggested it when first seeing one and finding out it was a modern and reliable car underneath, mostly.
Bless Morgan they even made perfect matching booster cushions to allow her to see over the screen in the Coupe.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

I think it's upbringing. The delightful Ms. Timmins minds her oil change schedules, tire rotation, etc. Her father is much like my father was. Cars need routine service.

We were talking today. That's not unusual. The last time MrsW washed a car was just before we got married - 37 years ago. She loves her Polo and we've had it now for 8 years. It's a bit of a quirky colour, very easy to live with and she won't hear of changing it. But its me who keeps it tidy. MissW - I taught to drive aged 15 on a local 'facility'. She's very good, but a bit harsh on the mechanical bits, despite my continued advice. She does clean the inside of their car, but I don't think she's ever cleaned or polished the outside. She adapts well, and often drives long distances in strange and sometimes large hire cars, so she impresses me (but I don't tell her - I'm her father after all).

My wife only cleaned the car once - you know those little square sponges which are rough on one side and smooth on the reverse? See used the abrasive side to clean some bird muck off the bonnet of her Corsa (not my cars thank god). Made a right mess - looked like she had used sand paper The local car paint garage used a buffer to take a layer of paint off so a respray was avoided. Now I clean her car and I sometimes wonder if it wasnt some kind of sneaky feminine trick so she doesn't have to?

In 21 years I can only remember one occasion when washed her car which sent me into apoplexy. She used Fairy liquid instead of the approved Autoglym. I don't think I need to say anymore.

Ah Venus and the art of Car maintenance. Yes it's a bit hit and miss among those I've known. But the other side is that while my Venus thinks car maintenance is filling the tank she will be worrying about how I maintain myself, and given that I don't do enough self maintenance that's a good thing. There's only so much maintenance worrying that one can do so worrying about me and a car or two is more than can be expected.
It's also about what the youngsters get to know and do in the early years. One daughter went surfing, the other came flying and driving. I was keen on all of those pursuits so yes, we reap... And I now have a daughter who is a better surfer than me and another who can fly (almost) anything with wings and drive anything with wheels better than I can. And that's ok.
This doesn't address the issue posted by Hannes but I suspect he knows the answer to his own question and would not have it any other way.
Venus maintains Mars so that Mars can maintain the cars. Well, sort of.

I think it all comes down to where in the list of priorities we might put our cars. Mrs FJ generally keeps her MINI looking like a mobile rubbish skip inside but keeps the house pristine. If it were all left to me it would be the exact opposite...

Mrs sospan treats the car like a mobile office/shopping cart! Community Nurse so her gear is in it. Also carpark tickets, amongst other bits and bobs. I clean the car. When she had lease cars for work she did clean inside a bit for the annual service/ lease check etc. but not inbetween...that was up to me! She is totally non mechanical...a true Venusian! As for map reading..... All roads lead to Venus or shops.
