Wet road conditions after long dry spells can be a treacherous mix of rubber and fuel particles.

Ideally regular rainfall will clean the surface of this.

I wonder if this was a contributing factor in your scare?

+1. As an ex biker I am always very careful when it rains after a long dry spell

Well don't stand in the water then!!! Seriously + 1 for the Avons absolutely amazing especially when fitted to a LSD axle drive

My car came fitted with Yokohama tyres. I really can not complain. Over 33,000 km and no scary moments.

Got to agree Peter, they work well for me. My daughter has them on her MX5 with similar good grip and wear.
I will be changing mine next year (5 years old) even though they have plenty of tread left. I hope to be able to fit 195/65/15 next year to get a bit more ground clearance.

Even with the higher profile they are still 6mm lower than the standard 4/4 tyres. The only problem is the size of the opening if you have a spare.

A quick measurement of the spare wheel opening suggests the higher profile tyre should fit. I will confirm that it fits before I commit to changing tyre size, next year.
Fingers crossed.

Yes I worked out that it will fit but may require some adjustment to the mounting of the snorkle stop light, and perhaps the position of the bracket for the hold-down will also need to be adjusted.

Unfortunately any change of tyre size in Italy must be added to the car's documents. This requires a letter of "no objection" from the factory (which I had to fight for but eventually received) and an inspection by the local office of our equivalents of the DVLA.

Hi Peter, over here I would notify the insurance company, and hopefully no additional charge. It would be worth it for the extra ground clearance.
When I get time I will find a friendly tyre centre and try fitting a 65 profile tyre in the spare wheel slot before committing myself.
