I would really consider ringing RT as a prospective customer and asking them how long they expect a f/s rebuild to last. If they give you a figure of 20k , I would then ask them why yours has lasted only a fraction of that.

For the future I would use Williams Morgan or Tim Ayres at New Elms (assuming you live in S Wales) , if you want to use a dealer , or our very own Spanner Juggler if you want a very personal job done to the highest standards.

I had a very bad experience of RT not tightening the shims on the damper blade correctly so I was left with an undriveable car. Millers did my Suplex & with hard chrome kingpins etc it was under £1300. No idea how long it has lasted though as I sold the car the next year

Richard Thorne is a very well respected Morgan dealer and as some people on here are happy to pay over eight hundered pounds for a service on a two year old plus four all the work done doesent seem too bad.We dont know exactly what the problem is but a phone call and a quick chat would seem the best way to go.If i had an unsermuntable problem with the mog i would be more than happy to drive past two dealers to take my car to him.

Thanks I shall be checking as you stated.
The last mot was 1005 miles ago and nothing was mentioned. This year (same garage) new young tester. I had to explain the suspension to him ! To be fair he demonstrated the play to me and left it as an advisory.

Also with respect to RT

I didn't own the car for the 4000 miles after the work was done.
So don't know how the last owner drove or maintained the car.
If you drive in potholed cities in the gutters up and over road calming measures the fns will take considerable wear.

I have a year to resolve it.
Thanks for all the advice
It will be sorted before the next mot

cheers

PS
I shall NOT be using any dealers other than for spares supply. In the last 45yrs I've owned and restored 150 plus classic bikes and 15 plus classic cars. Kingpins are a dirty but simple job in the grand scheme of things.

Agreed & for over 7 years I never had an issue with them. But this was so basic I couldn't use them again

Interestingly the 4/4 owner I met by accident on Sunday was asking me about bottoming out suspension on his five year old car.

As he drove away I kicked myself for not asking him about greasing his front suspension.

Not got his details either.

I know when I greased mine only a few hundred miles after the dealer had serviced it
.

So I learnt a big lesson about regularly greasing the job up!

My +4 had kingpin play from new. Went back to Morgan under guarantee who stated the play was fine.
First MOT issued with advisory 'kingpin play'. swear
Changed the kingpins with chrome when I fitted the Suplex kit. Did not change bushes as they measured okay.
Still a small amount of play one side.
My local garage does classic cars so has no problem with small amount of movement. As he says "It isn't as if it will fall off" smile

And I have had correspondence with another member of our community who had a terrible experience with RT. Their treatment of one of us was a total disgrace.

I would never ever use them, but then I have plenty of options.

Woodstock (a 1972 4/4) did this, but I fitted +8 springs and new rubbers in about 1989. The +8 springs at that time were slightly stiffer than the 4/4 ones and a known parts bin tweak rather than paying more money for 'uprated' springs.

Totally cured the problem and I drove the car for the next 20 years.

In the context of Dealer service, the MG Owners Club have run an annual Members Survey for many years, from which spares suppliers are rated by members. The results are published in the magazine with the number of responses per supplier which gives some balance.

Perhaps the MSCC might consider a dealer and specialist annual survey, because as I've said before, the comments on TM are not balanced, because some dealers are rarely or never mentioned, whereas others get regular exposure.

Some people weren't very happy to pay over £800 for their service and had to sit down for two days to get over it swear by the way it wasn't RT quiet
