There is an article in this months The Road ( magazine of the Motorcycle Action Group ) about The Dept of Environment in N Ireland launching a public consultation on a proposal to make the wearing of helmets mandatory for riders and/or drivers of , and passengers on , motor tricycles used on public roads .

This apparently follows a similar consultation about helmets on quad bikes , which has resulted in compulsory helmet use being included in a Bill currently going through the N Ireland Assembly process .

Is this the start of a slippery slope ?! ....

My experience of MAG is anti any form of compulsory legalities & have the mantra 'Let the Rider Decide'.

The problem is, not all riders are sensible. It IS a consultation period though, so they should at least be happy with that, but lets be honest here; quad bike riders should wear a helmet, as indeed should trike riders.

Whether or not the M3W would fall under the definition is as clear as mud, and I think as you do, that it may affect M3W drivers by default and not by design.

I think we should be concerned enough to make representation, at least. I'll raise this with the MTWC.

Surely quads are different and generally not driven on roads.

No, there's a breed of sport quad that abound on the local council estates...often used as a hoolie machine between cars etc etc.

Sadly, they aren't the preserve of sheep farmers in the hills..

Several quads on the roads round here , one person in our village uses one as his main vehicle , never wears a helmet .
