Having spent 48 years in product development engineering I always thought components (no matter what they were) were made either to a drawing or in a jig, to ensure at least all the critical dimensions were correct.
There is really no excuse for the plpes being as you describe.

Good grief, when I was in engineering .010" was an open limit, looks like it may have slipped to 10mm now.
