Is it possible to take the spare wheel off a plus 4 and fit a plate to cover the hole? Is this an option that the factory can supply? I'm asking because I could then fit the 4/4 luggage rack and the rear of the car would be lighter with luggage when I was touring. The luggage rack is also cheaper and looks nicer than the one that is offered by librands for cars with a spare wheel and no bumper or over riders.

It's possible but it won't be cheap.

Speak, with Cain, Wolf Performance, I would not be surprised if he could make you a nice Ali disk to fit, possibly with louvres, then you'd just need to paint it and put some foam strip around the edge. Hole in middle to clamp down

Thanks for the info - just spotted techniques do one after can internet search. I have emailed for a price and will check with Cain too. If they are not daft money it might be the way to go to solve the luggage rack issue.

Careful. While some models now come without a spare wheel, I believe the RAC will only recover punctured cars without one - if it was made that way.
Certainly was the case a few years ago, and I've not checked recently as the ruling does not apply to me. The RAC man is welcome to fit a spare tube by the roadside - I'll lend him some tyre levers.

You need to have a think about how it will fit. You are ok if your spare wheel cradle fits just below the level of your rear panel....the cover can bolt to that. I've been tempted to fit a cover to my Roadster as I'm not a fan of the spare wheel unless it's the narrow 5" on a 4/4......the other wheels look too bulky. My cradle sits higher ( perhaps due to my alloy wheel) and I'd need to remove it and drill mounting holes on the back panel....which I'm loathe to do....or create a new bracket.

I'm not sure the RAC AA person would know... And I certainly wouldn't tell them I'd left the wheel at home.

Good point about the wheel cradle - I do have the skinnier tyres on the narrow body. I'll check tomorrow to see if I would have clearance over the bracket.

When we got MrsW's Polo without a spare, I checked with the RAC and it was OK when the car came without a spare as standard.

Just to note that the rear tyre does provide a large amount of rear crash protection.
