Am I correct therefore in saying that the capacity of the bevel box (2012 in my case) to fill plug is 2 imp. pints or one quart? Irritating if it is because in France Redline gearbox oils come in 1 litre cans = 1.75 pints.
I just change my m3w bb oil with 75/140 redline i think those are the number i used..it was like less than 1/4 to the orange breather plug, as I spilled some out.
The correct level is to the bottom of the fill plug, which is the 10mm hex socket above the drain plug. With the car level, fill it until it just dribbles out of the hole. It is possible to do this on the later cars from underneath if you use a long filler pipe, or from the top but you will have to remove the stone guard. It's less than a quart when filled this way, its less than 600cc if memory serves

Many thanks. That should mean that one Redline 75W250 bottle should do. They are actually 1 US Quart which is around .97 of a litre. I am not going to be doing much mileage between now and next spring, so I will leave it to do in the place where I am storing it over the winter, as that has a four post lift in it, which makes life much easier.
If its a later one with the NVH mod done then its actually very easy to do. Just remove the black liner in the back, take off the stone guard and your done! Take off the bottom drain nut, drain and replace. Then take the 10mm hex nut off and full slowly until it starts to come back out the hole. I just used a long plastic tube and a funnel

No it is an early 2012 one with original "shouty" bevel box. Hopefully when I get back to France in spring, Esprit Competition in Aubagne will have re-opened and I can get the oil changed along with the chassis check/mod, compensator replacement, new FAG rear wheel bearings, new rear hub and if they have been made, MTWV2's magic steel sprocket. I shall be taking a pair of Blockleys out with me as well, as my original Avons are looking pretty chewed up. I live up in a mountain village in the Var and either way up is a series of 6km of non-stop tight bends.
I decided to change the bevel box oil to Redline Heavy Shock Oil. The box is a "new" one changed recently because the original box was a super whiner. Car is early 2012 and have tolerated box for some 11,000km hoping there might be some improvement. New box is better but still whines loudly. Doesnt pass the wife test, who wont do longer trips anymore. Even with earplugs and helmets on
Old box had breather at top with a tube leading up and over to exit under right hand side wood frame near rear wheel. New box has breather on side with no breather tube. I wanted to check the box so i did the "take out seat back etc method". Jacked rear and supported on axle stands Removed center floor plate Removed drain plug, collected oil in plastic basin Removed red breather/fill plug and concocted a funnel and pipe to allow filling. Put a little oil in and waited till it showed at drain. Original oil drained was about 300g Put plug back in and tightened. Started adding oil, lot by lot, waiting between each lot. I added approx 500g in total. Enough to almost reach the fill. As the car was still on the stands and in a heads down attitude i left it at that. Thought i would run for a few Km and recheck level Also assess if the new oil makes a difference noise wise, especially if it delays any temperature increases which increase the whine.
If this does not help too much, i was given a contact who does nothing else but rebuild diffs. I broached the possibility of a rebuild to better tolerances , new bearings etc. He confirmed the first step of using Redline, then to keep running for a while to establish a wear pattern. He could then strip and see what could be done.
Good pictures P964, I have had several dealership mechanics tell me that they now fill the box right to the level of the orange plug on the side. The theory is that the box is not pressurized and the extra oil AIDS cooling and adds a measure of sound deadening. On our first long road trip, my wife (and myself) were unprepared for the shrieking bevel box. The 2nd box is somewhat quieter but my wife's solution was a set of molded ear plugs which she claims makes the ride quite pleasant. YMMV
do we now for sure which fill hole is to be used? orange cap or fill hole un top of drain plug. Did somebody from Morgan not promise a manual back in 2014...
Also what is best way to drain de black goo that the factory installed as standard in our BBoxes......
