In the ealy 60's when my Pa was a Naval intelligence officer in Hong Kong he was visited by his US Navy opposite number. Studying the large pre WWI wall world map my dad had hanging on the wall behind his desk, his visitor said "Gee Benn, you need to get a noo map. Most of these countries don't exist any more - Bosnia, Herzgovina, Serbia......."

My Dad replied (with what turns out to have been remarkable prescience) "If you believe that those countries don't exist anymore, you really shouldn't be working in intelligence".

I agree that the different countries of the union are separate countries, whose individual identities are quite distinct. I also believe that the Union has been a remarkable success story and that we are better off together.

But a country is really only a patch of land agreed on after a war. Isn't it more about who lives there than the line on a map? The convenient thing about the UK is that we are an island so that simplifies things considerably.
If independence is just about getting rid of Westminster,I can see the point. But with delegated powers and another layer of politicians.......While at the same time wanting to be part of the Federal States of Europe?
No it's beyond my comprehension.

So you would agree with us being a country but not independent? I would agree with that completely.

Dave understands mogs, but he can take his clip board and give Nicola Sturgeon a good inspection and he still woundn't understand the Scottish thing - I think you have to be Scottish - so its up to them.

I think David that you are right. Maybe without being a Scot there's no hope of understanding.
Scotland is without doubt a great 'country' to tour in a Morgan. We had a fantastic time up there last year.
Bob - the thing is, I don't have a view about independence. All I would say is that if the majority want independence under the SNP, they should have it. In the same way that Labour want Corbyn in charge.
But I will never understanding such emotion wrapped around either issue. That's life !

Why bring Esther Rantzen into it?

I voted SNP for years but with sturgeon head of the party my vote will change. She thinks she should be running the UK and I hope at next years elections she get a good kicking.

I think that most people are economically illiterate. After all Scotland became part of the UK due to an economic collapse in central American investments. During the independence referendum one young lad was interviewed and he said "I want independence but I don't want to loose match of the day". It is poor innocents like this that are being led astray by Sturgeon and the like.
