When I was an engineering manager at an exhaust company in the 1990's we employed a liaison engineer from Peugeot/Citroen, he claimed then that their engine management systems could identify when the car was being run through the emissions test cycle and change the fueling to pass the test, after the test it would reset to normal road use. Still going on then! PJB

Just goes to show that the integrity of the corporate giants is no different in terms of greed than the one person scammer. Somebody is working out what the cost is of what the risk is of bending the rules and getting caught v. the cost of toeing the line.

I've just read an article suggesting that the US may fine VW as much as €18 billion (€37500 per car).

I wonder if the tax people will go after the owners as they have more polluting vehicles & owe back tax.
That should shaft residual values also.
As our CEO says when making a decision consider how it will look on the front page of a news paper.

Now I could see it in another light that Piech wanted to fire Winterkorn this April. Possibly he knew more than others at that time.

As I said in my first post all that happens is the unit cost of a VAG product goes up to cover the vagaries of the currently applicable legislation whatever form that may take, I don't think they will be unduly concerned it will be explained away to the shareholders that someone took the wrong decision and they will be chosen carefully and become the fall guy with a "package" come on now gentlemen we know how big business works.
The only thing that will sting will be that it will hold them back a millisecond or two from taking the crown from Toyota as being the worlds largest manufacturer.

and The owners are presumably unaware and I suspect would have a case against VW. Easier for government (if true) to get this back from VW. What does this all mean for global warming estimates??

I bet the legislation says something like....must meet standard x under test. So VW in court will say, it does! Nick
