The Obama administration on Friday directed Volkswagen to recall nearly a half million cars from the road, saying the German automaker used software intentionally designed to circumvent environmental standards for reducing smog.The Environmental Protection Agency issued the company a notice of violation and accused the company of breaking the law by installing software known as a “defeat device” in 4-cylinder diesel Volkswagen and Audi vehicles from model years 2009-15. The device is programmed to detect when the car is undergoing official emissions testing, and to only turn on full emissions control systems during that testing. Those controls are turned off during normal driving situations, when the vehicles pollute far more heavily than reported by the manufacturer, the E.P.A. said. An administration that is no stranger to 'conspiracy theories' discovers a 'conspiracy theory' ...  Thanks !

Morgan does not even call back some 2000 M3W's with potentially broken frames.
Seems there was some reason why they do not export 4-wheelers to the US From my point of view you are mixing up two different stories. The MW3 has a license to go to the US (as a bike). The 4wheeler Trad car did not pass the rear impact crash test. These facts have nothing to do with any reliability issues.

I would imagine that all manufacturers are "at it" to some degree. I'd agree.

I would imagine that all manufacturers are "at it" to some degree. I'd agree. Which is why a re-map can produce results. The original manufacturers take care, one way or the other, that the cars pass emissions tests by a good safety margin. Those doing re-maps are less concerned about having a "safety margin" and more concerned about good performance.

Even without cunning software to detect a test in progress, all cars are set up to get the best results in tests; who has ever achieved the official consumption figures in real life conditions ? My Cooper D for example is quite economical, but nowhere near as thrifty as the theory.

One of my son in laws is a senior accountant for a major global vehicle producer and we have had several conversations about just how they meet these mpg figures. Suffice it to say there is no way joe public can reproduce those figures, and yes they are all at it..

Emission standards (set by politicians?) are driving engineering instead of how it should be. I've heard some amazing stories from somebody in the know at Jaguar and it's a similar story.
