There's recently been a discussion on Mogtalk about greasing propshafts which tonight, led me to crawl under the Mog for some reassurance. What follows is a quick guide as to what's down there. You'll need the rear raised at least nine inches, and I have a sylph like figure.........well, almost.
First the axle filler/level plug. It's a big one and it has a warning sticker about the LSD and what oil should be used. (Check Handbook). The diff has caught some primer from the paintshop. There's no drain plug, but the lower diff cover bolt may well serve the purpose. Best practice though is to leave well alone unless it's leaking.

Next is the handbrake cable compensator which you can see is fixed to the roll hoop - offside.

Here's the other end (nearside) with threaded adjuster visible.

This is the nearside flexible brake hose. Although it's protected by the spiral binding, it touches the tank, so I've added a short length of cut hose for additional protection.

Here's the rear propshaft UJ, and the grease nipple is quite clear. It doesn't appear to have seen much grease. My standard gun with flexible pipe just fitted. Access is tight. The handbrake cable is visible on the bottom of the shot, disappearing into the tunnel.

And this is the gearbox end. Gearbox to the right, sliding yoke to the left. Two grease nipples in shot. Don't overdo the sliding yoke nipple. If you do it will spray grease all around the inside of the tunnel and make a right mess. Just visible lower left is the handbrake pivot...........

Here's a slightly lower shot, which shows the pivot, the return spring, and the cable just above it.The switch is for the warning light.

This is the remote gear linkage looking up and to the rear. A lovely elegant design, the sliding propshaft yoke is blurred lower right. The single selector rod is offset to the nearside and appears as a gold coloured rod.

Finally, the question of the gearbox filler plug. Well, there is one............
But there's absolutely no clearance and there's no access hatch in the side of the tunnel. BUT, it's 'filled for life' so unless it develops a leak, no need to worry. I was surprised just how close this is to the tunnel side. This shot was taken vertically upwards.

I hope you enjoyed the tour. grin2 thumbs

Nice as always!!!

"Your mission if you wish to accept it" is to do something similar for Front Suspension as I am totally bamboozalled.. as you know I have a 2002 4/4 and can only find a single grease nipple on the flipping thing...am I missing something?

Following a brief exchange on Mogtalk about the gearbox oil, I went back into the garage for a look under the tunnel cover. There, just aft of the clutch pedal is a rubber grommet. I prised it out, and hey presto, the reason that it's invisible underneath is that the hole hasn't been cut in the insulation. I've deployed Mr Stanleyknife, so now there's a hole. The thing is, there are four dealer stamps in the book, and technically the level should be checked at every service. nono There are no spanner marks on the level plug and I doubt it would come out as it was.....Although I'm not worried when there are no signs of leaking.

It does make you wonder..............thinking
The propshaft grease nipples showed no sign of having been greased either.
The axle oil 80W/140 SemiSynth is good for 20k miles apparently, and as I suspected, the bottom hex nut is the drain.
I'll post a picture tomorrow.
I might even have the wheels off...........

The grease nipples face forward so when jacked up and on axle stands you should be able to see them.
Miine also has a grease nipple at the top of the king pin instead of the one shot oiler, you can see this by putting the front wheels on max lock & looking into the top of the wheel arch.

I've been busy this morning. First a picture of the grommeted access hole in the right hand footwell.

Next a photo of the grommet removed, along with the insulation I cut away last night.

You can see the filler/level plug, and all appears fine until you look at it 'end on'. thinking

The hole is 1.353 inches. The nut is 17mm. As it is now, a socket won't go on. I've slackened it off (with difficulty) by fitting a ring spanner on from underneath and using a tapping stick as a persuader. But there's no room to remove it totally with the hole misaligned like that. Anyway, there will be a 'Dave's fix', but I need more time. So for now it can stay as it is.
I also revisited the axle filler/level plug. The size is odd - 1.138inches, or 28.9mm. I used an adjustable spanner on it and it came out easily. Oil is up to level, although black.
While I was under there with the wheel off I took a shot of the breather - the small black knob in the foreground. You can also see the parts sticker which states "Part No MRA0060.. Ratio 3.08:1.

This shot shows the AVO shocker and the location of the adjusting knob. It's the red & white blob under the AV letters.

And finally a spot of indulgence.........
After grovelling in the drivers footwell to clean and lubricate the pedal shafts, I ended up removing the organ throttle to fix a rattle. Once on the bench I just couldn't resist doing this...... innocent

And now at Keith's request........ grin2
Nearside with grease nipple sitting proudly on top of the blue spring.

Same side, view from below.....the nipple is tucked up underneath the steering damper, and almost behind the shocker mounting. Note how nicely my mohair spring gaiters concertina under compression. I may be knocking a few up from a bit of spare mohair so watch this space. nerd

Here's the offside....not quite so clear but same position - top of the spring. This one faces outwards, whereas 'tother faces inwards.

From below.....

Again, note how accessible AVO adjusters are.
