For peace of mind for additional power points especially USB style ones with cheap embedded voltage converters with no form of heatsink would be to have them as a switched power supply so only coming on when the car is in use.

I understand the concern Mark, but the unit I have used does not show any sign of generating heat and is sometimes useful to charge something when the key is removed. I guess a 3 amp fuse in the power line would add a little security.

The USB socket I bought has an inline fuse.
