My 2010 4/4 sport with 20k on the clock barely scraped through the MOT yesterday with "Axle swivel joint has play in a swivel pin" this was on both sides. The tester let it through but said I needed to see to it. So is it just bushes required (if so what type & material?) or is it better while the whole thing is apart to replace the kingpins - if so with what? stainless, hard chrome.
Not being mechanically minded I will have to take it in to be done. I`m looking for a long term solution rasther than a cheap quick fix i.e. it seems pointless replacing the bushes if a few months down the line the whole lot has to be redone to replace kingpins. I`m thinking of labour costs & inconvenience here as well as materials.
Advice, suggestions very welcome.

Definitely go for hard chrome kingpins and the latest bronze bushes with the spiral grooves.

Hi Iam 100% certain that the best combination for a very long time fix is to have Hardchrome Kingpins with grooved bronze bushes fitted with sufficient clearance to allow the grease to lubricate.
I have also made leather gaiters to keep out most of the road dirt etc.

The advice from those in the know is to replace the kingpins with hard chrome ones. I had that done recently and am looking forward to many 10's of thousand miles of use before having to replace them again.

As others have said Phil the best materials are Hardchrome Kingpins with spiral grooved (for grease dispersal) bronze bushes, you will need new top bolts and best fit new upper grease nipples as the MMC used more than one thread form so you know everything fits. One issue is your close to the date when adjustable camber plates were fitted, these can be seen as a threaded stud welded to a plate and locknut at the bottom of the kingpin (if you send a photo I can tell you) these cars have dome topped kingpins and concave lower faces to the top lugs. It's further complicated by the fact I have seen cars with dome top kingpins fitted to flat plate top lugs and flat top kingpins fitted to concave top lugs......both are incorrect. Sounds complicated but really isn't you just have to ensure whoever is doing the work has both types of pins in stock. As Forest Gump said you never know what you've got. ;-).

Remember to grease them every 1000 miles.

And I strongly recommend Mulfab steering bearings. Much better than the standard items.

Yes, very true, I have found some problems with the OE part binding on the main spring on more than one car. Also the 140lb main springs that come with the kit cure the bottoming some drivers find.

I have greased every 500-600 miles. But have PMd spanner juggler.
