Would appreciate thoughts and observations about the exhaust sounds of 1990 Plus 8 and how to improve them. My recently acquired, single exhaust model has a disappointingly quiet exhaust. Sounds much like an old Ford. Any suggestions on increasing and improving the sound? Thanks. John

Librands or Melvin Rutter do a stainless sports twin system that will sound better and probably deliver a few more bhp.

I have the Librands one (albeit on a 1600cc Ford Kent engine) and it sounds wonderful!

I have the full dual Librands system on mine and it sounds nice but not too intrusive when cruising, it was fitted from new.

My first 1994 +8 had a standard single side and taking that as the benchmark the Librands is about 5 times as loud and possibly liberates a couple more horses.

I fitted the full Librands manifold and twin exhaust system to my 1991 +8. The difference in sound was awesome. My only criticism was it was a B****d to fit so I would definitely recommend you get a dealer that has experience in fitting the system to carryout the work.

I was told that it isn't an easy conversion to twin exhausts as the exit through the inner wings is in a different place on the near side and there is a new hole to cut on the offside, although the under wing fixing is easy.

On my car I replaced the rear pipe with a sports one from John Worrall which is a straight through pipe without the silencer box. Heart of England no longer do exhausts but mine was one of two that he had left.

The sound is certainly nothing like a twin system but better than it was without being too noisy.

Seconded , a diy job will take you at least 2 full days of work and those around you will learn a lot of new words.

Do go for the newer type manifolds which exit through the chassis, the under sump crossover system is a b****** to keep leakproof.

My +8 is fitted with a Librands system, with side exits, and it's glorious - not intrusive or harsh at low speeds, and the dog's danglies at higher revs. One feature to check for on any system you choose is how well the silencers tuck up under the wings - some systems are rather bulky, and reduce ground clearance.

EJS - if you are anywhere near my neck of the woods, you are welcome to listen to the system as fitted to my car, so feel free to PM me

Thats a coincidence I have been thinking along the same lines. My +8 has a single exhaust as well, but I would really like a twin pipe exhaust to make it sound better. I am seriously thinking of a Lebrands system. It seems they do a system for cars with a cat and also additional tail pipes for various sound levels. I will probably get it done by a dealer over the winter months, fingers crossed.
