@ Eric Thanks, Super Mario is a plumber, very used to all sorts of pipes, so you're definitely onto something there wink

@Stan, no I wasn't aware of that flexy joint added by Garage 56, and I didn't find that post (it's not in the "Garage 56" thread, is it? That's where I looked).

But ... I looked for the garage 56 site and FB page and almost concealed in the FB picture I found the detail that matters. A bit of work with the picture and there it is, clearly a flexy joint just in front of the silencer:

I think I'm sending this to my dealer, because all he told me by phone was that the exhausts were "stronger", and I already know that won't solve anything.

But whatever they send I'll take it, it's their money being spent under warranty and I will not refuse new parts sent under these circumsntances or else I may get in trouble and nullify by my own doing the warranty I'm entitled to (this is "lawyerish-speak" but nevertheless true lol)

What I've been thinking is that, if MMC doesn't bother that the old cracked exhausts remain here to be experimented upon, I might try to get someone to fit a flexy joint to the Mk3 ones, exactly at that same spot.

The Mk3's are interesting because their welding is so strong the crack started there but didn't follow it, instead it was the pipe itself to suffer. Makes it ideal to cut and add a flexy joint. This is clear when you see the exhaust as it is now. Here a little video I made to send to Malvern, along with my formal complaint.(not sure if they saw it, but I did my bit to help them):

Glad you managed to find that picture Mario, try as I may I couldn't find the actual thread it was in.

I bet as soon as you saw the picture though you thought to yourself, " if a small independent company can think of this then why couldn't MMC and/or the specialist exhaust producer they use?"

I might also add that I recall other regular posters mentioning a similar solution whilst suggesting the addition of an extra body mounted support in the case of the heavier Brooklands setup.

As you, I and all other posters already know, simply stronger won't work. I'm back to my father wanting to bang their heads together up there in Malvern to see if a little engineering common sense might be knocked into them.

It will be interesting to see how your dealer reacts to your contact, and let's also be honest here, couldn't they themselves have already worked out the potential fix?

Once again, best of luck, keep us informed and above all, keep smiling.

I think a flexi joint in front of the silencer is the way to go. I followed a Brooklands M3W a few weeks ago and you could clearly see the ends the tailpipe nodding up and down pivoting about the weld at the front of the silencer, a sure way to induce a fracture.

A solution so obvious that it is ridiculous that it was not taken up when Morgan first encountered the problem.

It was a solution that I suggested way back when this problem first surfaced with the Brooklands exhausts and I don't claim to have any engineering qualifications.

Indeed. The bevel gearbox was getting a good looking at when I saw G56 last. Maybe it will not be just Bwitched who has a quiet bevel box, running with the right clearances and preloads in the future?

Peter,

That is because you have some common sense, which has always seemed to be desperately lacking in Malvern. They have replaced it for the most part with a "not invented here" attitude.
