"Vanity" plates over here are usually the shortest number you can get. The STVA (kantonal version of the DVLA) has regular online auctions for the plates. "Normal" numbers are 6 digits long. http://www.auktion.stva.zh.ch/default.php

To show their lack of humour they have tried to cancel some previously sold, including PEN 15. According to on report the owner fought this through the courts, I don't know what happened.
Depending on the outcome, he's feeling either up or down. I seem to remember that plate was owned by Steve Parrish the ex bike and truck racer and journalist.

In some cases it is cheaper to buy an old car or bike and use this as a donor vehicle.
I love your approach Jays. Thats a wonderful thing. I am going to go off and search a few plates from the past now !

In a similar vein to Jay's I registered mine in Aus (WA) where you can pay for (more or less) anything up to 9 alpha-numeric characters with the original UK (Malvern) plate.....and I could get it in black and white!

I don't understand the DVLA's attitude.
If this is a money making exercise why don't they show a little more imagination? In many US States you can freely select letters and numbers up to the 6 digits required. Here it would be 7. So MORGAN 1 to 9 would be available...
Also, DVLA "Censor" combinations they feel might offend, to a level that remind me of the 1950s. So SEX, GOD and a number of less obvious words are forbidden, as are some numbers. Try buying anything with 666 and 999 on it, even though they used to be available.

Even though you can pay a large or very large amount for a plate it is never yours it belongs to the goverment all the time and they have the right to take it from you without compensation.
