Sitting outside Williams today was a sad looking red Plus 8.
The owner cracked the sump on someting in the road, lost oil and before oil pressure was lost the lack of oil flow has caused damage to the VANOS system. Seems the oil pickup is rather easily damaged it the sump is damaged and that the VANOS system is driven by oil pressure....!
I was told the car has to go back to MMC, Engine out, new sump, re-set up the VANOS timing. At least £1500 labour, plus parts.
Wonder if insurance covers that!
So, the ground clearance is better than a Roadster, but the risk is still there....!!

Wonder if a sump guard would be a good idea?

Sump guards are fine, but they reduce ground clearance. And unless they are robust, they will still bend when impacted. They also reduce airflow, so where the sump plays a role in cooling the oil, the cooling effect will be reduced.
On the Trad there's a chassis to bolt one to, but on the Aero? It would need a proper design.

The sump is not low and it sits above the front cover plate, so it must have some object in the road.

Had a sump guard on my first mini when I thought I could be a rally driver, I couldn't. Took a massive hit one day and the engine was fine but the silencer fell off!

I also had a Mini with a quarter inch plate bolted to the subframe. Somebody had drilled a load of holes in it for ventilation I suppose. You could jack the car up on the sump guard. But changing the oil was dodgy.......
