It does happen but not usually on the first pull. First is usually a notice to correct it and then if you get stopped again it will be a fine. Not sure how many ignores it will take to have it removed but you'd think with ANPR it would be an easy nick for dodgy spacing.

First stop £100 fine for misrepresenting a number plate, report to DVLA who put it on ANPR. £100 fine next time, three strikes and your out. DVLA will withdraw the plate and apparently issue a Q plate. So beware.

I was chatting to a Wiltshire Traffic Officer about putting a black and silver ageless plate on a trad Mog and although he said it isn't allowed I got a strong impression that, at least in Wiltshire, as long as the ANPR camera gets a good clear read they are not overly fussy.
BUT as has been said, you buy a licence to use a registration number and DVLA can withdraw it should you abuse the number. Inappropriate use of a Black and Silver plate could be considered to be such an abuse.

Having said that - it would be nice if they spent a bit more time on poor old granny's being phished (hope I have got that right) and burglaries given the fiscally depleted plod numbers rather than number plate spacing.
Just stop it with the fish jokes before you start (you know who you are!)

Problem is Peter ANPR generally doesn't read non reflective plates such as Black and Silver. Not sure I would trust the opinion of one officer in one county anyway.

Generally being phished is dealt with by Fraud investigators not traffic officers. Having number plates that can be tracked by ANPR, (and a lot of misrepresented plates can't ), helps catch lots of burglars and other travelling criminals.

I have seen reflective black and silver plates on a car. Wonder who made them? I agree, the opinion of one TO, especially in Wiltshire may not be that reliable an indicator of policy! But finding them on the road in South Wiltshire is like winning the lottery. There are just 1346 Warranted Officers to cover 1300 sq miles and 650,000 people. So they are spread very thin! There used to be 2 Traffic cars in Salisbury, but since the closure of the main Police Station in Salisbury the TOs base has moved to Devises, 32 miles away. So they don't seem to venture here that often.
