Nice to see a Ducati in a different colour , the vast majority seem to be red , or black on the exposed models (Monster/Monstro?).

Were Ducati the first to use the desmodronic system widely?

Yes.

I think Delage used it in some of their race cars, and Mercedes certainly used it on the W196 F1 car and their 300 SLR racers, but you could hardly call that "widely".

Yes I think I recall about the Mercedes, but not the Delage. All (?) current F1 engines having their valve gear operated pneumatically, so I think they also use the desmodronic system (or at least a version of it) as the valves are closed positively rather than just returned by spring pressure. I was wondering why it hadn't found more widespread acceptance. One contributing factor I guess would be the consideration of the rev range. Most road cars don't use 10,000 rpm and above, where motorcycles and F1 live in these high realms.
