You could probably get away with the black and silver / white plates on a modern Morgan and I'm sure some do. They look right on an old looking vehicle like a Morgan. My 69 has the original plates but if it had had modern reflective plates I would have changed them for the correct period plates.

I'm sure you could get away with it but I'd only fit black and silver plates if they were legal, hence my checking with DVLA. Would rather not give police any excuse to stop me etc.

Yes John I agree they look right on a Morgan but on say a 1975 TR7 they would not so imho rolling the black /silver plate rule forwards just doesn't make sense.

Mm, think DVLA is part of the Capita crew?

Andy

Oh well, in that case it will be down to somebody, anybody and nobody to sort it.

V796 the definitive guide to displaying number plates that we use has not been updated on the .gov website. The original change to reflective plates was for reasons of safety, I am finding it difficult to believe that this would be changed.

I agree it's unlikely, hence my doubting the story in Practical Classics. There is more to it than that though-just check the from page of this number plate supplier:

http://www.tippersvintageplates.co.uk

I've asked them as well where they got their info from!

If you read the first posting of the TRR link it refers to a FBHVC newsletter which in turn reported the results of a meeting with DVLA. That's where it came from!

Her's the link again

Technically illegal put a cheap pre 73 cherished plate on your car and get a set of black and silver plates. But have a set of white/black and yellow/ black behind them. Ready with "sorry officer I forgot to take my show plates off".......
Just an idea ?

Thanks for the link Malcolm T, but as I'm not a member of that forum it won't let me read it!
