Eighteen months ago I almost bought a 1975 4/4 from a well regarded dealer in the North West. My wife pulled the plug on it at the very last minute which p***ed the dealer off (understandably) and me also. The car was cheap (£13k or thereabouts) and a bit shabby but felt strong and authentic and I liked it.
The same car has appeared for sale again at the same dealer recently. It's had a respray (which it needed) and is now about £16k. I don't know whether to buy it. (The wife is more circumspect now although she is asking why it has come up for sale again so soon, which I guess is a fair question) My budget could accommodate something more expensive (up to about £30k) but there's something about these 1970s ones that I like.
Any thoughts?
P.

I too like the old X-flow cars (but a 5 speed conversion is desirable). The simplicity is a bonus, but such things as engine wear mean more regular rebuilds over modern engines...

If it was my decision, I wouldn't hesitate to go for a well cared for 4/4 Sport (2008/2010) rather than something like a 1975 model.
Yes, it's almost twice the price of your 1975 example, but you'll get your money back if you sell it and in the meantime, you'll have a (imho) better car to drive, Less to rot & less to rust. Less to wear out so quickly (due to age). Better fuel economy for the same performance etc....
Less time under the hood = more time out enjoying the drive.
If you can stretch the budget to a newer 4/4 with the Mazda 6-speed box, then all the better!

I ask because I'm currently researching if a 6 speed box would fit into my 2014 4/4. After calculating the ratios it could give a better result than a shorter axle....If I should find out that the 6 speed box would fit by size.

The 4/4 is definately a 5 speed Mazda gearbox Must have been a typo - 6 is rediculously close to 5

Sounds reasonable to me - and frankly not disimilar to mine - resprayed prior to purchase. What I've found is parts are easy to get (and not expensive). Go for it and enjoy.
I've still got the 4 speed box too.
