Yes, Roger - and thank you. I like the idea of a bit of light spannering but the reality is that I'm not really very good at it. So, whilst a cheap old one might seem like fun there is the danger that it will turn out not to be such fun. On the other hand, Oakmere Morgan is within an hour of my house and they have a 2009 model 4/4 with the folding windscreen and some other nice bits that is within budget. They also have a new orange 4/4 "speedster" which looks fantastic but I might regret the lack of practicality. (And others have suggested that buying new is not necessarily the way into trouble-free ownership experience.)

If that orange Speedster had been a Plus 4, I would have been knocking at the door..................

I very very nearly bought an orange Elise with black interior from Oakmere in 2013 after a 'strange experience' at another Lotus dealer.
So close in fact that I was there with my deposit...............

The reason I didn't seal the deal was a last minute anxiety attack about getting it in my second garage, which has narrow access. I was invited by Oakmere to take the Elise home to try it for size. A hugely impressive gesture.

BUT - that would have meant a 130 mile round trip with a mid way squeeze into a very tight space. Although some would have jumped at this offer, I couldn't do it, so backed away. I was as gutted about that decision as I was after I saw the ARP4. Two huge disappointments in two years!

The experience at the previous dealer which took me to Oakmere - I've talked about previously on TM but basically they weren't bothered enough about selling a car to return my e-mail & telephone call (after a visit and test drive).

That is pretty impressive of Oakmere. I liked them the couple of times I've been up to window shop. I know they're there to sell cars, but as you say, Dave, there are a few who don't really try.

I do rate Oakmere even though they are a new 'posh end' dealer.
But my best experiences by far have been with Brands Hatch Morgan, and that's where I'll be going for my next Morgan, unless something irresistable crops up secondhand, which is unlikely.

I bought a 1972 4/4 4 seater from Life's in Southport earlier this year, and haven't regretted it at all. I've done 5000 miles and only had two problems - the fuel gauge tricked me into running out of fuel by showing quarter full when it wasn't, and the positive connection to the starter became loose - fixed the first with fuel and the second with a brand new starter from an autojumble for a tenner - 1p more than the kit I needed to repair the connection on the old one. It came with a reconditioned engine (after 95,000 miles 40,000 miles ago) and a five speed box.

I like the fact that it's an old car - very simple under the bonnet and not so much money invested in it that I feel precious about it. The seats are a bit basic. When we did the factory tour it was the one thing my wife picked up on, but not with enough concern to warrant buying a later car with seats that might have a modicum of support.

When you make your decision just remember that for twice the price you won't get twice the enjoyment!
