Very well done. Just goes to show ..." Where's there's a will there's a way!" May I paraphrase.... where there's an open cheque book there's a way!. But credit goes to the old school mechanics who figured out a solution and made it work. Yes, the climate in this part of Queensland is hard to beat. Looking forward now to putting lots of miles on the Plus 8. In the next week or two, I'll be getting all the details of exactly what went into the rear end. If anyone finds themselves in a similar predicament PM or email me and I'll supply all that I know. Once again thanks to everyone for their advice.

Hi Niels Great to hear you are back on the road. On removing the rear diff cover were there lots of bits floating around? I codrove in a number of NZ taiga's for a mate in a 93 +8 and he destroyed his crown wheel and pinion on a hill climb we where in but managed to make it back to his place in Auckland.He managed to get a BTR from Australia without having to go through Morgan factory and did a conversion to disc's on the rear. We did the following Targa with lots of pad knock back and I drove the car back from Masterton to Auckland like that. Was unnerving but you had to be like the Bathhurst racers and left foot pump the pedal up. He managed to reduce the lateral play in the half shaft which improved the brakes no end.He also had a adjustable balance bar with two master cylinders which made it a treat to drive. Was the BTR from the Commodore the same width as the Salisbury diff or did your engineers have to shorten it. Certainly pleased you are back on the road again-enjoy. Regards Doug

Doug The loose bits I saw were a pin about 10mm in dia. and 20mm long. This was located in the axle tube and popped out when the old bearing as being removed. I think the new diff is a Borg Warner - at this stage I cannot tell you for sure. I will know the model number and full details in a week or so. The axle was too wide and had to be shortened as did the drive shaft from the gearbox. The old brackets for attaching the damper to the axle had to be cut off the old axle and re-welded onto the new.
I only have the single circuit brake system and no proportional valve - looks like they got lucky with the relative differences of slave cylinder sizes - the braking is 100% better than the old drum brake.
Peculiarly, prior to the new diff/axle, the ride and handling was hideous. I was planning on changing out the springs, dampers etc to fix the problem. Now, its smooth as silk and is much more stable. No suspension components were changed or serviced. I have no idea why the improvement is so drastic.

Probably a tightening of the U-Bolts....

Niels. With the lever arm shock, mountings brackets were on the U spring shackles but replacing the lever arm shocks with telescopic mine has a shaft welded onto the bottom U bolt mounting plate. Might help to locate the rear axle. Presumably you have the small drum brakes for the handbrake or have your engineers used the discs some way as the handbrake. Interestingly that you find it much more stable. Would be interested to see some pictures of the setup including the disc brake conversion. My 77 +8 has only a single brake system with booster, my mates was a 93 +8 and he had the dual system but there was enough room to put in two master cylinders with a balance bar. Regards Doug

Hello All
Whenever, I am in a hard right turn, whether under power or idle there is a grinding/whining noise from what appears to be the rear left hand side.
I'm thinking it's the differential because although it is central, its located next to my left ear. To add to my difficulty, I have a noisy stainless steel exhaust system making noise discrimination challenging.
1) Anything else I can do to confirm this diagnosis?
2) I don't suppose anyone knows where the original differential was sourced from?
And
3) Is there a better replacement choice than the original?

Reminds me of a while back on a long run, everytime I turned hard left or right at speed I noticed a metallic clunk on the left hand side. After I got home I tried to find the cause, checked wheels, exhaust, panels to no avail. Eventually looked under passenger seat and retrieved my metal drink bottle
