In June Tina and I were flying back from Malaga to Luton. Tickets circa €60 each. On this trip, our late evening fight was delayed 4hrs and 10minutes.Immediately after flight,I contacted Easyjet customer Services- no reply. I tried to find a claim form at Airport- not available. Tried to find on-line claim process - there wasn't one. Gave up!!! Anyway, this week my daughter came across Flight Delays company who for 29% of the compensation, plus £25 plus open ended contingency cost would process a no win no cost claim. Unwilling to do this under their terms I tried Easyjet again. I now found the on-line Easyjet Delayed Flight form in accordance with EU Directive blah blah blah. Filled it in (10 minutes) and pressed the button. 5 days later informed by Easyjet we will be paid €400 "each" !!! So if it happens to you, you know what to do!!

I'm not by nature a litigious person.
If I book flights from a low cost carrier that are only costing me €60 a pop, I don't expect the quality of service I'd expect from a flag carrier at full price. A cheap flight delayed for a few hours; I'd just suck it up. I certainly wouldn't waste my time pursuing them for it.
As a general rule, you do get what you pay for.

In my book a fair trade is: if you pay £60 the max you can get back is £60. More will cause all the low cost guys to increase there prices.

Jetstar is the Qantas LCC and would be the Aussie equivalent of Easyjet/Ryan
I was waiting for an international flight out of Sydney one day and I heard an announcement. "Jetstar regrets that the aircraft for flight JQxxx to Denpasar [Bali] is unserviceable and the that the flight is cancelled. Passengers should proceed to the ground floor, collect their baggage and contact the airline to make new reservations"
Bail is our main overseas holiday destination and most people on that flight would be ordinary people off to holidays and weddings. I would guess at least 50% had no travel insurance. So whatever bookings they had would be trashed and they would lose their money.
For me the lesson was simple, avoid LCCs if your trip has any value.

Lol.....I'm flying Jetstar from Bangkok to Melbourne in February! Fingers crossed then!
I'd be hugely embarrassed if I received €400 compensation for a €60 flight that was just delayed for a short time. Different if you are faced with paying for accommodation or extra travel so it does depend on the circumstances. I do wonder how many compensation claims will be made by passengers trying to get back from Sharm? I'd just be glad to get back from there safely and in once piece!

I'm with you Jays, but then I always take travel insurance (now). There was a time I never worried. I too would not expect more than the airfare back.
I grew up as an expat kid. Boarding school in the UK, parents wherever in Africa and Asia and have experienced many 12 hour plus delays, with VC10 engines changes in London and Beiruit and overnight stops - and great fun as a teenager. But I digress!

I'd guess that the extra zero may be a typo.. I doubt they'd offer that much without a VERY good reason!!

The extra zero is not a typo and as for "the VERY good reason" see the message below from Easyjet: ///"I am very sorry for the inconvenience that has been caused following the delay of your flight to London Luton on the 25th of June. Having reviewed the details of your flight EZY2410, I can confirm that the reason for the delay was due to operational decision. This event would be classified as non-extraordinary under EC Regulation 261/2004. In this situation you will be entitled to a compensation of 400 Euros per passenger.///
For those of you that would feel uncomfortable just be aware that for delays under 3 hours you have no claim. We do the Malaga/Luton trip about 10 times a year. In 80% of the trips the flights are delayed- albeit between 40 mins and 3 hours. I had no idea what compensation would be awarded and it appears to be regardless of ticket price. Maybe it was due to the fact the schedule time for take of was 23.40 and we left at 03.50 in an airport with No catering at that time of night and Easyjet also failed in their statuary obligation to provide some form of refreshment and the information flow to the passengers was virtually zero. Just a change to the departure message board. It was a very fraught night for 100+ passengers.
