31000m means less than 20 miles You are sure such milage is representative for non scratching? Or are we searching for a missing K?

As nippymog says, the Three Wheeler one is just cosmetic...it is not fitted to the main body. As such, I doubt it moves about on the bonnet so unlikely to scratch the paint. I fitted the bonnet strap on the main body, so it also make a sense,...easy job.
Cheers, Georges

I was finding grit was getting into the underside of the belt , so very minor scratching was occurring despite occasional cleaning. Protection film under the buckles has sorted it though.

Lot of Morgans, and most with belts but always sheep skin underneath. No issues after 100s of thousands of miles. Never raw leather on paint.

I like the belt, I know it's purely cosmetic and a bit of a cliche, but to my eye, it looks period correct, and the tan one matching the interior would look cool...but not if it scratches the paint, I'd absolutely have a cow..not a pretty sight even in rural Vermont...and not worth it.
The verdict on paint damage seems decidedly mixed, some find the MMC strap scratches, whilst others don't.

Not totally cosmetic, if unfortunate enough to have an accident it might just stop the bonnet, if it come away coming, up and into the passenger compartment.

The strap is fastened to the bonnet itself, not the car ! When you undo the zsus fasteners which do hold the bonnet on and lift the bonnet off, the strap comes with the bonnet. It serves no functional purpose on the m3w.

I think the confusion here is that the original post was asked in relation to the bonnet strap on the newer M3W which is cosmetic only
The bonnet straps on 4 wheeler models and I'm guessing if there are any on old 3W'er models do/did have a function in stopping the bonnets flying off in race crashes
I think the small risk of scratching is a small price to pay for what is an aesthetic niceity and a accessory in keeping with the design age of trad styled Morgans and their racing heritage
There aren't many cars where a bonnet strap looks so appropriate

Thank you, Stewart..nicely summed up.
Not listed as a factory option, I'm assuming the lambswool model seen on the four wheelers is available on the 3? and in a matching saddle brown? I know the after market models are available in a wide variety of colours and sizes, but they seem to be backed in leather, which seems like an invitation for rubbing.
