AS for 17mpg, well if you never charge it, then it's just creating electricity to use later at the same time as its driving you along (in sport mode) so it won't be fabulous. Use EcoSport mode and charge it every night and I think we'll see the equivalent of 80mpg pretty easily.
It's got a 24 mile electric only range - and with mrs_t's usual commute being around 25-30 miles it will mean very little fuel cost to work each morning, then around 40-50mpg on the way home. If she gets her way and gets a charge point at the office, then it will be even better.
I'm currently evening things out by plotting the purchase of a big old 4x4 shed on eBay for around 3000. Either a big straight 6 diesel or a v8 petrol look likely. Neither of which will likely do much better than 20mpg!

Go Tesla! Better performance, more practical. I love mine I have to say, I prefer the philosophy of the Tesla. Make it all electric, with a realistically useful range and build an infrastructure for recharging. To my mind, a plug in hybrid where for many users the engine hardly ever gets fired up, except on the rare occasion that they go on a long trip sounds like a recipe for trouble and unreliability. Clearly this won't be the case for Tony's wife, as the engine will be needed daily to give the battery a boost on the return journey.

Shooter I love the p85D - it's a cracker in terms of tech. Thing is though it's tech is great, but it can only be delivered in an American land yacht sized package. The forthcoming model x might be up our street though... However for us living thoroughly in the sticks and with no facility at present to install a high power charging point it just wasn't a goer. I've got to knock down the current garage and move it around 100 yards closer to the house before I can out a proper charge setup in place. That's 2-3 years away, and the p200D will be out by then...

Go Tesla! Better performance, more practical. I love mine As the Business starts to achieve its planned success ( that's why the Max went) I am starting to dream about the Max replacement, I recently visited the BMW Dealer with the view of TD the i8. It only took a very short brief from the Sales specialised to put me off. The style and cockpit are second to non, but the Stats on the car don't add up, also the way BMW present the package, Charger, Servicing etc it seems the car is never yours and only BMW will ever own the car. Turning my attention to the Tesla and it's attributes deffently make this the better machine in my view, maybe not so sexy, but the stats and reviews from people who own Tesla cars is very good, I will be taking the offer of a test drive soon and with 100% tax relief great for the business too. Ooooh and finally 3.2 seconds 0-60.

Well done Rich, that must have taken some severe man-logic to have one as the family car! Do keep us informed on a regular basis how it works out, both on the practicality front and also running expenses and general suitability for the job in hand.

It was actually pHD level 'lady maths' by Liz that translated into trading the family RR for an i8... Luckily she's much cleverer than me It's not going to be practical - far from it (have you seen the size of the boot!) but it will be a great commuter vehicle for liz, which with 4 seats can manage to ferry the whole family if needed for short trips. I'm keeping the FF as the main family car, it's actually making better mpg than the range rover which is hilarious given my lead boots. However, I have drawn the line at using the FF for tip runs, so I've jut bout a 1996 4.2V8 Nissan Patrol off eBay sight unseen from Scotland. What could possibly go wrong... The e46 M3 will go and all use the money I get from that as a project to upgrade the 911. A New exhaust, probably some uprated brakes and new springs / dampers and maybe at some point some engine tuning....
