I did and it is at best misleading if one is charitable and wrong if one isn't. Probably another official site written by someone who does not understand the regulations, or who thinks simplification is more important than the truth. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 (Relevant date in regulations is 1st September 2001, and this is an excerpt)
Fixing of front registration plates: vehicles registered on or after the relevant date Section 6 (5) In the case of a motor cycle or a motor tricycle which does not have a body of a type which is characteristic of the body of a four-wheeled vehicle— (a) a registration plate must not be fixed on the front of a vehicle if it was first registered on or after 1st September 2001, (b) a plate need not be fixed on the front of the vehicle if it was first registered before 1st September 2001.
Fixing of registration plates: vehicles registered before the relevant date: Section 7
(4) In the case of a motor cycle and a motor tricycle which does not have a body of a type which is characteristic of the body of a four-wheeled vehicle, a registration plate need not be fixed on the front of the vehicle.
So if your trike is car bodied, then you do need a front number-plate in the UK. But as I said before, teeny tiny chance of not having one causing problems.

The DVSA vehicle examiners guide states that a three wheeled vehicle with a motorcycle derived front end does not require a front number plate. That I'm afraid means your M3W needs a front number plate. It's to do win a safety issue when m/c's had the plate mounted along the front mudguard and was considered a safety issue. I am issued with the guide as a vehicle prohibition officer. There are not that many of us which is why you are not getting stopped.

Exactly - and my quoting of the relevant act of parliament says the same, albeit in fancy language and without the reason.
