I considered Dynotile, and although I'm sure they would be absolutely fine for parking cars on I was a bit put off by the honeycomb construction and the recommendation not to use point load objects like axle stands and trolley jacks without boards to spread the load.

When I asked Ecotile about this point, their response was "No problem with our tiles, that's why we sell so many to Kwikfit".

My barn was plonked on the ground (no foundations) a few hundred years ago. The part I made into the garage slopes down quite a bit, and also had water running down the deep ancient concrete. I used rubber stable matting which has "dimples" on the underside allowing floodwater to run under the mats. It is a good insulator, and has channels on the upside so oil spills etc run down and are cleaned up easily. It is also quite OK to stand on, lie on etc.
Altogether worked out well for my purposes.
Good luck with your project.

I see you went with Mototile Dave T.

I've now got most of the costs together and to be honest not a great deal in it but the plastic tiles look easier then ceramic and a lot quicker to lay. So I suspect this miht be what I'm doing over Christmas.

Dave how do you get on cutting the tiles and did you glue any of them down?

Hi,

Yes, I went for Mototiles. I'm pleased that I went for the thicker tiles. The joints aren't as neat as the flush-fit tiles but I think they are far more durable.

They were very easy to fit. It helped to have the garage quite warm as the tiles become a lot more flexible. Also Its important to have all the tiles at an even temperature as they go together easier (due to variable expansion if they are at different temperatures).

I cut the tiles with an electric jigsaw using a very coarse blade made for cutting plastic. Initially I tried a much finer blade but this seems to melt the tiles and cause them to fuse back together along the cut line! I used a large hacksaw for some intricate cuts and a Stanley knife to cut around architraves. I don't recommend using the Stanley knife, a jigsaw is much easier. Finally I used a hole- saw and Dremel to fit around the legs of some heavy duty shelving that I had no desire to move - this was probably way over the top but I enjoyed doing it.

I laid the tiles loose and have just glued down the entrance ramps and a couple of tiles going through a side doorway using a Unibond clear adhesive. Early days yet but the tiles are quite heavy and seem very stable.

I got a slightly better deal by calling the suppliers and haggling a bit!

Unfortunately, I have oil on my garage floor. I seem to have a very small leak from around the gearbox, very hard to tell without a hoist.

Is it a worryingly large quantity, or is it just your car marking its spot?
