My Plus 4 moggy is a weekend low mileage runabout in good condition like lots of others. It's not a concours car. It’s coming up to 5 years old, I’ve had it for 18 months and next March the insurance comes up for renewal. It’s been insured on an agreed value basis up to now, using the original purchase price from when I bought it nearly two years ago.
The question is whether I should continue with the agreed value basis. Does anyone have any idea of how to go about getting an agreed value when the original purchase is several years away? I have looked at retail prices of similar cars and they don’t seem to have changed very much but there is an awful lot of variation caused by mileage, condition, fitted extras etc. Should I get a valuation from a dealer? If so how much should I expect to pay for it? And would the dealer I bought it from and who also does the MoT etc be acceptable?
All suggestions gratefully received!

For my insurance company, every two years I need to provide a valuation to maintain the agreed value basis of insurance. I ask the servicing dealer to provide this and this has been done for no charge by both the factory and Williams as part of the annual service. Personally I would expect to be charged for the valuation if I were not having a service at the dealership.

A Dealer will estimate an agreed value (for around £20 plus vat from my nearest dealer) i have to do this every 2 years for my insurance company. Ring up a dealer and ask. Agreed value is probably cheapest but does not accumulate a NCB.

The insurance company I am with refuse to accept an agreed value from a garage that has done a service . I think that crazy but have found another garage who do values if any major work is done then the value goes up .

My insurer usually sends out a form with the renewal documents for completion by the servicing garage every couple of years. I've now had my car 3 years and the agreed value has gone up £1,500 so well worth doing. In conjunction with the garage we looked at what similar model, age and mileage cars were available on Autotrader to help determine the value. No charge was made.

Do please bear in mind when getting the valuation done for the insurance company that you want the value to be as close as possible to the replacement cost - which is often higher than the purchase price depending on the age of the car.
Our old (1985) car was bought for around £13k in 2003. We added an Allon White hood conversion and some other extras. The last valuation that Mike did was around £16k saying "this is around what it will cost to replace and Allon White or similar would probably retail the car around £17k". When we traded the car in to Allon White in December 2013 it appeared on their web site at £17,250 and sold in less than a fortnight. And they gave me a higher price on trade in than we had paid for the car - nearly paid for their hood conversion! I think Mike was spot on.

Agreed value is worthwhile as it creates some certainty should the worst happen.
I was with a different broker at one time who agreed mine from six photos. I'm now with Gott & Wynne who send out a form at renewal every other year and Kevin Vernon has always completed it for me at no charge (although I am a customer)

Agreed value is probably cheapest but does not accumulate a NCB. Not necessarily true. Although the current insurer of my three wheeler does not assign a NCB, that is because it is a so called classic policy. I've had otherwise ordinary policies though that were agreed value, all depends on what the insurer offers. You certainly want to go through one of the recognised brokers. I currently have to provide photos every three years, but not any declaration from a dealer.
