I have a 2001 4/4 Zetec 1.8 , and like many others before me, I am experiencing intermittent speedometer failure.
The speedometer stops working after I have been driving in the rain for a while, but after a night in a dry garage, it works fine again on the next run.
The problem is likely to be the speed sensor, or the wiring to it, but I can't find where it is. I have looked at several similar posts and it seems likely that it should be on the front wheel stub axles, or the gearbox, but I can't spot it on either of these.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please
I have attached a picture of the underside of my gearbox if that helps.

Definitely not on the front O/S hub for that model year, hub located sensors were introduced around 2011. I don't know your model specifically but normally they trigger off the gearbox output shaft and are mounted in the tail shaft housing, someone who knows for sure will be along soon I am sure.

Certainly on the 2010 4/4, the pickup was just off the rear of the gearbox output shaft and just before the u/j.

Thank you, it certainly explains why I couldn't see any wires near the hubs.
Is the tail shaft housing the last thing before the propshaft? If so it looks as if it will be tricky to access the sensor

Yes it is, there may be an access panel inside the car under the transmission trim cover, worth a look? Fingers crossed for you.

If it's anything like my old 4/4, you will need to take the transmission tunnel off to access it. Not a difficult job but laborious as the seats need to come out to,access the screws. I've some photos somewhere...I see if I can dig them out tomorrow.

So it looks like a seats out, leather off, and Gearbox cover off. Then hopefully I will see the sensor, and set about sourcing a replacement.
Using a bit of reverse engineering from "Making a Morgan", which I have just treated myself to, the attached photographs give me some trepidation.



Particularly the words "With a good deal of contortion, the gearbox cover is installed"

A slight review to my previous post! My gearbox cover would not come off...it was so firmly glued to the bulkhead with sealant that I couldn't shift it! By the way, you do need to take the propshaft cover off first to free up the rear of the gearbox cover...and that needs the seats out!
I ended up cutting an inspection hatch in the side of the cover to access what I needed...which was the handbrake ratchet......the pickup for the speedo is in the same area as you can see from the attached photo. The actual sensor with its cable is mounted just below the segmented plate.
