Hello, I wonder if anybody has had the experience I had today with my immaculate 2012 3W with just 1300 Miles on the clock.
I was driving at about 40 mph and started smelling petrol: I wondered where the smell was coming from, my 3W normally smells a bit like petrol when in the garage, but never when riding... While I was thinking about the possible reasons for the smell, I noticed some drops on the left aeroscreen. I stopped the car immediately, fearing a possible fire, I noticed that one of the hoses on the fuel injection was wet. All clips where tight, no evident punctures or damages on the hoses. I carefully drove home and checked the fuel system removing the cover above the injector: again no evident problems. I re-started the engine, no leaks, I drove the car again and had no more leaks. Any idea about what could have happened ?

Can anybody give me a short explanation of how the injection system works on the 3W ? I think it must be an indirect injection system, with one injector for the two cylinders: is it correct ? What are the two plugs on the cylinders ? If there is only one injector, why I see the fuel hoses going to both cylinders ?
Sorry for these basic questions, any advise will be welcome.

Robby, the S & S has a throttle body which delivers fuel to each cylinder separately.

If all the clamps are tight and there's no obvious leak...consider the possibility the smell (and droplets on the windscreen) are the result of an encounter with a lose gas cap on the car in front of you on your last ride.

Clean everything off and see if it happens again.

I disagree, I would definitely look to the Mog as the culprit.

A smell of gas and a wet left screen is exactly what happened to me. Blake in California had a problem with the injectors as such and got them replaced. That wasn't my problem, it was the fuel line going across the engine that was leaking. (What does it do, by the way, equalize pressure?) I replaced the single position clips with adjustable ones. Stainless, not that it matters for this discussion. My dealer had the car for fifty days without finding out more than I had. They tightened "my" clips/clamps a bit more, that's all.
After that no smell. That smell is quite scary. Good hunting!

The fuel leak is probably from the hose that delivers the high pressure fuel to the injectors, they have a history of leaking, several reports on TM. If it has crimped fuel hose clips they should be replaced with proper reusable fuel hose clips, not just ordinary worm drive clips There are two fuel injectors, one for each cylinder on the head. The throttle body only meters the airflow to the engine, not like a carburettor.

Check the hose under the heat shield(?) that says "HOT". On mine, 2012, the hose had started wearing through where it crosses between heads. My solution was to put a notch there where the hose rubs on the shield. I also replaced the clamps with screw clamps.

Our car had a damaged injector o-ring that also gave similar symptoms.

I had this happen to me earlier this year. The smell of petrol and droplets on the screens was a bit scary especially after reading various posts on here, but all went back to normal after the BMW in front of me turned off. I had just followed him out of a filling station.

Panic over and no smell of petrol since.

I have had this twice now. Both times the culprit was the "crimp" type fitting on the small petrol pipe which goes between the two injectors. Both times it was on the passenger side ( right hand drive) which hot sprayed with fuel.
Replaced with screw hose clips designed for fuel lines. Fixed.
Why twice? First ones were the factory fitted crimps, then motor was rebuilt and the crimp fittings used.
Coincidently, passenger screen fractured when second leak happened?

Seems like this is quite common. Easy fix but not pleasant when it happens.

After earlier posts on this topic I added proper hose clips next to the original crimped clamps as a precaution. Belt & braces.
